initdb creates a new PostgreSQL database cluster. A database cluster is a collection of databases that are managed by a single server instance.

initdb must be run as the user that will own the server process, because the server needs to have access to the files and directories that initdb creates.

$ initdb -D /usr/local/var/postgres                                                                       The files belonging to this database system will be owned by user "aburns".
This user must also own the server process.

The database cluster will be initialized with locale "en_US.UTF-8".
The default database encoding has accordingly been set to "UTF8".
The default text search configuration will be set to "english".

Data page checksums are disabled.

    postgres -D /usr/local/var/postgres
or
    pg_ctl -D /usr/local/var/postgres -l logfile start
